Classify how each person is engaged — full-time, contract, intern, part-time — so salary calculation, benefits, and holiday eligibility flow through automatically.

Before You Start
- HR Admin or Payroll lead mapping out the distinct categories of workers the company employs.
- Each Employee Type bundles together salary calculation days, benefits eligibility, holiday eligibility, and comp-off rules in one switch.
What You'll Achieve
- Create the master list of Employee Types (Regular, Contract, Intern, Part-time, Consultant, Shift).
- Ensure payroll, attendance, and benefits automatically behave correctly for each category.
Five common Employee Types
Most companies start with this set.
CONTRACT
Hired for a fixed duration or specific project
PART-TIME
Works fewer hours than standard full-time staff
INTERN / TRAINEE
Temporary staff gaining work experience
CONSULTANT / FREELANCER
External professionals hired for specific tasks
REGULAR / SHIFT
Shift-based employees working a rotating schedule
Two Work-Schedule Modes
Each Employee Type runs on one of two shift behaviors.
EMPLOYEE LEVEL
A Work Schedule is assigned directly to the employee — fixed hours (e.g. 9 AM–6 PM, Mon–Fri) with a consistent weekly off.
SHIFT ROSTER
Hours follow a rotating roster. Working hours and weekly offs change depending on which roster the employee is on.
How to configure
Two steps to register a new Employee Type.
On This Screen
The Employee Type screen lists every category with its Work-Schedule mode, salary-day setting, and status. Search to filter; click Add New to create one.

Open Employee Type
Go to Core HR ▸ Organization Structure ▸ Employee Type.

Add an Employee Type
Click Add New, fill in Code, Name, Work Schedule mode, Salary Calculation Days, Comp-Off Calculation, Benefits Eligibility, and Holiday Eligibility, then click Save.

Every lever that each Employee Type controls.

| Employee Type Code | Unique identifier. Example: REG for Regular, CON for Contract. | Required |
| Name | Display name shown in onboarding and employee records. Example: Regular Employee. | Required |
| Work Schedule Mode | Either Employee Level (fixed schedule) or Shift Roster (rotating roster). | Required |
| Salary Calculation Days | Whether payroll treats a month as 30 days, 28–31 days (calendar-actual), or 26 working days. | Required |
| Comp-Off Calculation | Enable or disable comp-off accrual for this employee category. | Required |
| Benefits Eligibility | Whether people in this category are eligible for statutory and voluntary benefits (e.g. insurance, retirement). | Required |
| Holiday Eligibility | Toggle to determine whether the Location's holiday calendar applies or paid holidays are excluded (typical for interns or contract). | Required |
| Status | Active — available during onboarding; Inactive — hidden but historical records intact. | Required |

Edit, activate, or retire from the list view.
On This Screen
Row-level actions let you Edit, toggle Status, or Delete. Deletion is only permitted when no employees reference the type.

TIP
Keep the list short and intentional — Regular, Contract, Intern, Part-Time, Consultant covers almost every scenario and keeps payroll simpler to audit.
WARNING
Changing Salary Calculation Days on a live Employee Type affects the next payroll cycle. Communicate with Payroll before flipping the switch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the same person switch Employee Types?
Yes — when a contractor converts to full-time, change their Employee Type on the profile from that effective date. Payroll, benefits, and holiday eligibility re-evaluate from the change date forward.
Do benefits vary within a single Employee Type?
Not through this screen. Benefits Eligibility is a yes/no per Employee Type; granular plan selection happens in the Benefits module.
Which Salary Calculation Days setting do we recommend?
Actual calendar days is the most common choice for salaried employees, as it handles February and 31-day months transparently. 26-working-day and 30-day modes exist for statutory requirements in specific jurisdictions.
Can an Employee Type use both Work-Schedule modes?
No — pick one mode per Employee Type. If a role needs both, create two Employee Types (e.g. Regular and Regular Shift) and assign the right one per person.
